What Is an ABR® Designation, and Who Is It For?

The Accredited Buyer’s Representative (ABR®) designation is designed for real estate professionals who specialize in representing buyer-clients throughout the home-buying process.

How to Earn the ABR® Designation (U.S.)

1. Education

  • Complete the two-day core designation course.
  • Choose and complete one ABR® elective course.

2. Work Experience

  • Document five completed transactions where you exclusively represented buyers.

3. Professional Affiliation

  • Maintain membership in good standing with REBAC and NAR (National Association of REALTORS®).
    (International REBAC members are exempt from NAR membership.)

4. Exam (Online Course Only)

  • Pass the core designation course exam with a score of 80% or better.
  • Pass the elective course exam (required by some states for CE credit).

5. Application

  • Submit your designation application with documentation of completed transactions.

Costs & REBAC Dues

  • Course Cost: Online courses are free through December 31, 2024.
  • REBAC Membership:
    • First year: Free.
    • Second year: $110, prorated based on join month.
    • Subsequent years: $110/year.

How International REALTORS® Earn the ABR® Designation

Education

  • Complete the ABR® 2-Day Course (online or classroom).

Professional Affiliation

  • Be a member in good standing with a cooperating association outside the U.S. that has a Bilateral Cooperation Agreement with NAR.

Application

  • No application form required.

Costs

  • Application Fee: USD $185 (one-time).
  • Course Cost: Free online courses through December 31, 2024.
  • NAR Membership: Maintain International REALTOR® Membership with an annual fee of USD $75 to keep designations active.

Maintaining Your ABR® Designation

  • Membership: Keep NAR or REBAC membership active.
  • Inactivity: If membership lapses, the designation becomes inactive.
